Snowflake House is having its Annual General Meeting tonight at 7pm at Lakeland College (Lloydminster campus) in Room 1012. The AGM is where we do the elections for our board, discuss the financial statements from the previous year and the budget for next year. Refreshments will be provided. We would love your feedback. Our next regular meeting will be October 19, also at 7pm, location to be decided. We're having a BBQ on September 18, 11am-1pm in front of Border City Furniture (4817-50th Ave). We will be selling bbq ribs, smokies, or hamburgers, as well as a pop or water. All sales are by donation, and all proceeds go towards our mission of supporting families. Border City Furniture supplies us with all of the supplies (thank you Calvin and crew!), so all we need to supply is the manpower! If you would be able to help us out with this, please text or call Lily at 780-872-4596.
February 28th, 2015 (1-3pm Lakeland College) will be our next Sibshop: Secret Sibs!
For those who have never heard of Sibshops, they are fun, activity-based workshops specifically for 6-12yo siblings of children with special needs. This month we will be using invisible ink, making secret keeper boxes, and playing games involved in guessing and keeping secrets. Worked into this fun is support for Sibs, recognizing that being a Sib is sometimes a good thing, sometimes not-so-good, and often somewhere in between. Sibs have a lot to offer to each other, and to their families, and this is a chance for them to be just kids with other kids who 'get it'. See our Sibshop page for more info on this and other upcoming Sibshops. If you would like to register a child, please contact us at [email protected]. We still have spots available, and the more people we have the more fun we can have too! Our next meeting will be at 11am on Saturday, October 25th, at Lakeland College (Lloydminster Campus: Room TBA). We decided to move from Monday evenings to Saturday brunch as this works better for our other board members. We hope to see you at the next meeting on the 25th! We will be talking more about our upcoming Blue Moon Gala.
Please come check out our Annual General Meeting on September 22, 2014 at 7pm at Lakeland College, room 1012. Yes, we are doing elections for our board positions, (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, Public Relations Officer). Please consider whether this is something you are being called to do. If being on the board is not for you, please don't let the elections scare you off. Even if you are nominated, you will have the opportunity to refuse and we will accept your refusal with no questions asked. We look forward to sharing with you what we have done this year, and what we will be doing in the next. These are exciting times for Snowflake House Respite Foundation! Oh, and membership fees will be due for the year, so bring your Loonie! Where else can you join an awesome non-profit like ours for only a buck? See you all on Monday, and bring a friend! Snowflake House Respite Foundation is a non-profit organization that believes that “Everyone is Different and Everyone is Beautiful”. Its mission is to support and strengthen families by providing quality respite care for children and youth with special needs. On Friday, Sept 5, 2014, we had a BBQ at Border City Furniture. They provided all of the food and supplies for us, so everything we made was pure profit. As a result, we raised $405.35! Not only that, but Calvin from Border City Furniture said that they would match our funds, so we actually raised $810.70. Totally amazing!
Thank you to Connie, Lily, and Rebecca for working the bbq, and thanks to our customers who came out to enjoy bbq burgers, smokies, and ribs. I am pretty sure we will be back next summer. This was likely our last fundraiser between now and our 2nd Annual Blue Moon Gala. See details on that soon! We held our second Garage Sale of the season with the addition of a BBQ. A big thank you to Cervus Peterbilt, especially Mark, Amy, Dalton, and Geoff, for providing the BBQ and the manpower to make that possible for us. The BBQ alone raised $160 this weekend.
Our 2-day total for the Garage Sale was $378, plus a scratch ticket worth $3, thanks to some interesting haggling from one of our customers. So, in total, we raised $541 this weekend. Thank you to Connie, Gerald, Mathew, and Lily for your manpower in set-up, take-down, and operation of the sale. Gerald and Lily are excited to have their garage back for the winter. Thank you, again, to our major garage sale item donors Trevor Lloyd and Melissa McGarry. We had a lot of people asking about our organization and we were able to provide people with brochures as well as tell them about our upcoming Blue Moon Gala. It was great to get our name out there! If you missed out on our delicious BBQ products, come see us on Friday, Sept 5th at Border City Furniture and we will grill you up a burger! Hello there. This is Dougie. He is 8yo, and lives in Lloydminster, SK with his sister, their Mom and Stepdad. They love to do things together as a family. Dougie especially likes to spend time at the lake. Doug's Mom and Dad both work full-time, so sometimes Doug's sister stays home to look after him. That's ok, but she has been looking forward to summer holidays just as long as Dougie has. She's pretty young to worry about feeding tubes, lifts, and wheelchairs. You see, Dougie has cerebral palsy. Last summer, Doug's Mom couldn't work because she was driving back and forth between Lloydminster and Edmonton. Dougie spent most of that time in the Stollery Hospital. It was a scary time for his family, but they pulled through. They are all looking forward to spending this summer in Lloydminster with family and friends. Snowflake House Respite Foundation has been providing respite services to Doug's family since Sept 2013. Their current respite provider, Rebecca, comes to the home three days a week to give his sister some 'me time' while their parents are at work. Rebecca always brings fun stuff to play with. This makes Doug's time in his standing frame more entertaining. Sometimes Rebecca and Doug go to a wheelchair accessible park, or just go for walks outside. Sometimes they hang out at home with the family's dogs. It's important that Doug's care can be provided in his home, where it is already set up for his wheelchair. Doug's Mom, Amy, had this to say about Snowflake House Respite Foundation: “I would recommend Snowflake House to anyone who is in need of respite care for their children. Based on our experience, I would trust that other families would be matched up quickly with excellent respite providers for their children.” This family gets government funding to help pay for Snowflake House Respite Foundation's services. However, this year, this family's funding was cut by more than half. Now it will only cover 10% of the hours they were planning to use in July and August. This makes for difficult decisions for the family to make. It is unfair to expect Doug's older sister to provide all of the respite care needed while their parents work, and it is impossible for either parent to take the entire summer off. Even during the school year this covers less than half the hours used. After last summer, this family deserves to have their stress levels lowered. Would you consider sponsoring a scholarship for a family like this one? |
